An exhibition on migration, rights, and belonging, paired with a series of accompanying events

"Stories in Motion” (Geschichten in Bewegung) brought an installation to the SWANE Café in Wuppertal, exploring how migration, racism, and belonging have shaped political and cultural life — accompanied by panel discussions, concerts, and workshops led by activists, artists, and affected communities. Around 450 people engaged with the exhibition and events across eight months.

Why this matters

People affected by racism and migration rarely find spaces where their histories and perspectives are centered — not as objects of debate, but as protagonists. At the same time, public knowledge about the structural roots of exclusion, from colonial history to today's citizenship laws, remains thin. Political education that connects the personal and the historical, and that is built with affected communities rather than about them, is urgently needed.

What we did

Travelling installation: A multi-panel exhibition tracing political and cultural events across centuries that shaped our understanding of migration, rights, and belonging — including perspectives of young people with racism experiences and examples of migrant self-organization and resistance. Hosted at the SWANE Café in Wuppertal's Luisenviertel, a well-known socio-cultural venue and hub for People of Color.
Panel discussions & community events: Five public events covering political empowerment through urban culture (incl. a concert with Ade Bantu), Roma rights struggles past and present, memory and racist violence ("Erinnern heißt kämpfen"), and the legacy of the Berlin Congo Conference — co-organized with local partners SWANE Café/Kookaburra gGmbH, Decolonize Wuppertal, and IDA-NRW.
Workshops: Hands-on sessions on colonialism and its present-day effects, co-facilitated with Decolonize Wuppertal.

Impact & Outcomes

Reach & representation: Around 450 people engaged with the exhibition and events. Panelists and speakers were exclusively people affected by racism — centering their expertise and lived experience throughout.
Community connection & empowerment: The exhibition created space for people with migration and racism experiences to share and reflect personal as well as historic moments of exclusion or activism, connect with local organizations, and find entry points for engagement. New partnerships emerged, including with Decolonize Wuppertal, and existing collaborations deepened.
Ripple effects: The project's success sparked further activity beyond its original scope — additional film screenings, a planned follow-up event on Othering and Belonging, and plans to tour the exhibition to further venues across NRW.

Im Rahmen der Eröffnung unserer Ausstellung: Geschichten in Bewegung:
Installation und Veranstaltungsreihe zu Migration, Rechte und Kämpfe um Zugehörigkeit zeigen wir am 8. Mai 2024 um 19 Uhr den Kurzfilm „Das Recht, Rechte zu haben“ mit anschließendem Podiumsgespräch.

In Deutschland leben aktuell über 12 Millionen Menschen ohne deutsche Staatsangehörigkeit. Obwohl hier geboren besitzen 1,5 Millionen von ihnen keinen deutschen Pass. Menschen ohne deutsche Staatsangehörigkeit sind nicht vor Abschiebung geschützt, dürfen bei den Bundestagswahlen weder wählen noch kandidieren und haben keinen Zugang zum Beamt*innenstatus. Wenn sie sich selbst organisieren, unterliegen sie den Regeln für “Ausländervereine”. Im Asylverfahren ist das Recht auf Teilhabe noch weiter eingeschränkt. So haben die Menschen nur ein begrenztes Recht auf Versammlungsfreiheit, Freizügigkeit, freie Wahl des Wohnorts und des Arbeitsplatzes. Was bedeutet es, staatenlos zu sein, mit einer Duldung zu leben oder eine andere als die deutsche Staatsangehörigkeit zu haben? Welche Kämpfe haben Migrant*innen, BPoC, Sint*izze & Rom*nja für gleiche Rechte geführt und führen sie aktuell?

Der Film regt dazu an, über die Bedeutung von Staatsangehörigkeit nachzudenken und sich für eine Gesellschaft einzusetzen, in der das Recht auf Rechte für alle uneingeschränkt gilt. Er wurde im Rahmen der Kampagne “Pass(t) uns allen” von With Wings and Roots e.V. und RomaniPhen e.V. erstellt.
